Double Leg Calf Raise From Floor
A basic two-leg calf raise performed from the floor to build calf strength and Achilles loading capacity before progressing to a step or single-leg variation.

Muscles Targeted
Gastrocnemius, soleus, Achilles tendon complex, intrinsic foot muscles, and ankle stabilizers.
Key Benefits
- Builds foundational calf strength with a simple setup
- Loads the Achilles tendon and plantar-flexor muscles through a controlled range
- Provides an easier starting point than calf raises from a step
- Helps establish even weight distribution between both legs
- Works well as an early progression toward heavier or single-leg calf raises
Equipment Needed
No equipment is required. A wall, rail, or other stable support can be used for balance.
How to Perform the Double Leg Calf Raise From Floor
- Stand with both feet flat on the floor about hip-width apart.
- Use a wall or stable support lightly if needed for balance.
- Keep the knees straight but not locked.
- Drive through the balls of both feet and raise the heels as high as you can.
- Pause briefly at the top without shifting the weight to one side.
- Lower the heels slowly back to the floor and repeat.
Programming Options
- Start with bodyweight and focus on equal pressure through both feet
- Use a slow lowering phase to increase control
- Add external load once bodyweight repetitions are easy
- Progress to a step for more range when appropriate
- Progress to single-leg calf raises once strength and control are sufficient
Why This Exercise Works
The floor-based calf raise trains plantar flexion without the deeper bottom position created by a step. That makes it a simple, accessible way to build initial calf and Achilles capacity before progressing range, load, or single-leg demand.
When to Use It
Use this variation early in calf-strength or Achilles-loading progressions, or whenever you want a simple bodyweight calf-strength exercise without the extra range of a step.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from a calf raise on a step?
The floor version does not allow the heel to drop below the forefoot, so it uses less ankle range and is often easier to tolerate.
Should I hold onto something?
Light support is fine if it helps you keep the movement controlled and symmetrical.
Where should I feel this exercise?
You should feel the calf muscles working through the back of the lower leg.
How can I make it harder?
Add external load, slow the lowering phase, move to a step, or progress to a single-leg version.
Is this a good starting calf exercise?
Yes. It is one of the simplest ways to introduce calf loading before progressing range or single-leg demand.
